Tech & Facilities Policy, Rules, & Procedures Q&A

If student stations are not working properly, what do we do?

Contact Tech immediately to troubleshoot the issues.

Software or hardware needs an update; Can I update the machine myself?

No. Before we update, Tech must test first and get clearance from the Tech and Curriculum Directors.

Can students/ members enter a classroom and start using the stations unattended?

No. Students/members cannot be in the classrooms unattended. They can only be in the classrooms if their teacher is present for a private lesson/class or a member reserved the room. If a teacher is not present for a class or private lesson, a tech or staff member would need to be in the classroom, and then the students/members can enter.

After a private lesson, class or membership reservation, students/members must leave the room so Tech can set up for the next event.

Does SoundCollective have a Lost & Found?

Yes. The Lost & Found is at the front desk. Please see Admissions for details.

Are students allowed to touch the SSL board and outboard gear in the Recording Studio?

Due to the delicate nature of the SSL Mixing Console, we require all members and member guests to be accompanied by a certified SSL audio engineer or technician before interacting with the mixing console. For more information, ask a SoundColletive staff member.

Can students or members bring their children to class or the facility?

Due to liability concerns, students and members are not permitted to bring their children to class with them.

Are students, members, or guests of members permitted to rewire, plug in auxiliary sound gear, or tamper with DJ and Production Stations?

Due to the complex nature of our DJ and Production stations, we require all students, members, and member guests to work with a SoundCollective staff member to make any changes outside of the standard station setup. If you require changes or are unsure if your ideal setup is outside of the standard station setup, please ask a SoundCollective staff member for assistance. Students and members may plug in their own flash drives into the USB Dock to save their work or access their media.

Can students bring in their own laptops and gear to set up in class?

Yes, students are permitted to bring their own laptops and gear to class. However, SoundCollective cannot be held responsible for the loss or damage of your personal property. As a reminder, SoundCollective provides laptops featuring the latest industry-standard Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), plugins, and more for students, members, and guests to use during their sessions.

How should students and members save their work?

Students and members should collect and save their work to their own flash drives. We’ve added a reminder to do so to all of our computers’ desktops.

What should students, members, and faculty do if the fire alarm goes off?

If the fire alarm goes off in the building and it is not a test, we will all need to exit the building single-file up the steps to Broadway. The meeting place is the Charging Bull. If the Broadway exit is blocked, we must exit the building out the back door single file and exit to New St. The meeting place will be the Charging Bull.

Are guests welcome at SoundCollective?

Guests are welcome! We encourage you to bring your friends and collaborators to jam at our facility. Please send us a list of your guests’ names when you book your room.

Are recording and streaming engineers available for sessions?

Recording engineers and streaming services are available at an additional cost. Please contact us for more details at (646) 747-0144 or [email protected].

How do members and students book specific instruments for their sessions?

If you need us to provide specific instruments for your session, please let us know ahead of time so we can reserve them for you.

How do visitors notify SoundCollective that they do not want photos, videos, or audio of them used on social media or in other marketing material?

You may opt out of being included in media material when checking in to the facility at the front desk.

Food and Drink Policy

The SoundCollective Food and Drink Policy is an effort to make the facility an inviting and comfortable place for learning while maximizing the continued value of SoundCollective’s equipment and furnishings. • Food and drink waste must be discarded in trash or recycling receptacles.

Booking and Equipment Sign-Out

The first priority for all bookings is to accommodate classes, membership, and teaching needs. Extracurricular projects may be pursued as a second priority, though we cannot guarantee accommodations for these bookings. The reservation and sign-out policies apply to all SoundCollective equipment.

  • Students and members must reserve equipment in advance and are responsible for canceling bookings they no longer need. If booked equipment has not been picked up by the end of the reserved period, all future bookings will be automatically canceled.
  • Equipment dedicated for specific class use may not be signed-out for general use throughout the term of the class.
  • Students wishing to sign out gear must make a request through SoundCollective prior to making a booking. Permission for this type of booking will be at the discretion of the SoundCollective Tech Team.
  • Equipment must be picked up and returned within operating hours. Equipment that is not returned by the end of the lending period is subject to a late fee of the same daily rental rate the equipment was signed-out for, plus an additional fee of 15% of the daily rate.
  • Special accommodation requests for drop-off or pick-up times must be made at the time of booking.
  • The borrower is responsible for the equipment until it has been checked back in by a SoundCollective staff member. Please do not leave any equipment unattended outside the facility, as you will be responsible for it.
  • All information provided by the borrower on the sign-out form will remain confidential unless the individual has violated any of the equipment sign-out policies.
  • Students failing to respect the responsibilities listed above, failing to return equipment in good working order, or failing to return equipment at all, will be invoiced by SoundCollective for the full value of repairs or replacement.
  • Sound Collective does not supply storage media for gear or recording devices. Borrowers must provide their own media storage.

***SoundCollective reserves the right to change these Policies and Procedures at any time.
